Flameproofing is the action of treating items used for artistic enhancement (usually fabric or wood) with fire retardants so they do not contribute to the spread or severity of a fire.

While these words are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between them. Flameproofing refers to the treatment of interior items in a building with flame repellent chemicals so they are no longer combustible. Fireproofing refers to the treatment performed at the construction level of a building or structure so it is not weakened in the event of a fire.

As per the FDNY, any item or material used for decorative purposes inside a building will need to be treated with flameproofing chemicals. While not an exhaustive list, some commonly treated items are wood, scenery, hangings, greenery, drapes, curtains, carpets, upholstery, fabrics, and textiles.

According to the FDNY, locations where the public gathers or buildings that are considered public gathering places need to be flameproofed. Again, while not an exhaustive list, typical locations include restaurants, bars, nightclubs, catering halls, theaters, department stores, etc. Locations such as houses of worship and museums may fall under different requirements.

Staten Island Flameproofing uses chemicals that are non-toxic and water-based. In addition, all chemicals we use are on the FDNY approved list. We can provide Material Safety Data Sheets for our chemicals upon request.

It is our recommendation that flameproofing procedures occur on-location at the business site. This helps save on expenses involved in having to remove and later reinstall treated items. However, if a customer requests, we can provide off-site treatment also.

The best time for flameproofing treatments to happen is when the commercial site is closed for business. However, we are able to work at any time a customer requests.

As per the Health Department, the Building Department, the FDNY, and insurance carriers, businesses must have all required items at their business site flameproofed with fire retardants before they are issued a Certificate of Occupancy and are able to be open for business. However, more importantly, having your business flameproofed is the best preventative measure you can take to minimize the spread and damage of a fire should one occur. It's one of the most effective things you can do to protect your business from the loss of life and property.

Items that require flameproofing treatments (fabrics, wood, curtains, decorations, etc.) are either soaked in or sprayed with flame repellent chemicals.
